Body & Sold
Body & Sold, written by Deborah Lake Fortson of Tempest Productions, Inc. (tempest@rcn.com), and directed by Artistic Director Shelley Smith, is a powerful documentary about juvenile sex trafficking that is prevalent in our communities. The compelling script, written from interviews with sex trafficking survivors in five major US cities, including Breaking Free in Minneapolis, gives voice to victims, and inspires and promotes discussion and action.
The play is a perfect segue from our most recent production, Invisible, about homeless suburban youth, written and directed by Smith, as homeless youth can be approached by a pimp three times within the first 36-48 hours being on the street. The pimps prey on the weak. They lure victims wherever our youth hang out: the internet, malls, libraries, fast food restaurants, schools and even hospitals. They do it for easy money. Supplies of drugs and guns run out, but girls never do. The pimps do it because the demand, which comes from all walks of life, never ceases.
Chain Reaction Theatre Project will be part of the national and local movement to tackle this problem in this production. The true stories in this play, including those of Minnesota youth, will be brought to life throughout the Twin Cities metro area, before the Super Bowl arrives in Minneapolis in February 2018, at which time sex trafficking is expected to increase by 50% (although it is prevalent all the time). Chain Reaction Theatre Project will create awareness of this horrific issue and inspire audiences to take action. At each performance, we will be partnering with local nonprofits who are doing the important work of fighting sex trafficking. A talkback will take place after each performance.
Admission is Pay-as-you-can with a suggested ticket price of $15. Tickets can be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door by cash, check or credit card. All seating is general admission.
