James Hill and Anne Janelle Opposites attract. James (ukulele) grew up playing folk, jazz and blues while Anne was a classical cellist. But the pairs differences became their biggest asset in 2008, when Anne was working on her Masters degree in cello performance at the University of Ottawa and James was wowing crowds with his ukulele wizardry at festivals across North America. A commission to record a duet track led them to form a duo and to cut True Love Dont Weep, which earned Traditional Album of the Year honours at the 2009 CFMAs. After side projects to record and tour as solo artists, 2016 marked their return as a duo. We both came to realizethat the duo is our strongest musical offering, James says. Prepare for a night of dazzling, intricate, passionate, enchanting music. www.JamesHillAnneJanelle.com
Nancy Laberge (first-up) With its infectious folk-pop and incisive lyrics, Nancy Laberge's new album When We Were Friends heralds the arrival of an important Canadian voice. The Calgary-based artists second solo outing leaves no doubt that she deserves a national audience. Coming off her previous album, Write From The Heart, Laberges extensive journey in creating When We Were Friends began with the heart-wrenching title track. If words are ingredients to a song, then a song is the dish, the record is the meal and the live show is Thanksgiving dinner. -Nancy Laberge www.NancyLaberge.ca
