Witchcraft Blue
Witchcraft Blue Directed by Michael Sargent Documentary 1hr 36mins
"It's like a license to just be." ~ Becky Bottoms
It's not clear whether burlesque is a utopia or not, but it's clearly a far cry from the dystopia imagined by Margaret Atwood (and now popularized in the current Hulu series of the same name as her novel). "The Handmaid's Tale" centers around the experience of young women who have no control over their bodies. On the burlesque stage, by contrast, women (indeed, performers regardless of gender) largely do as they wish with their bodies. This film is a 90 minute portrait of people who do burlesque, and their relationship to the craft. Is it stripping? Is it objectifying? Is it empowering? Is it body positive, and if so, just how far does that body positivity go?
Driven primarily by interviews, but also with front of the house and backstage footage, "Witchcraft Blue" is an exploration of these and other questions, in the bawdy and fascinating world of burlesque. It includes interviews with Becky Bottoms, Candy Sprinkles, Fantasia, Ginger Rita, Gitzy Go Go, Iris Estable, Kinky Slippers/Violet, Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, Marilyn Melons, Michelle Estelle, Mink Diamondz, Mistress Fanny Pearl, The Incredible Mr. and Mrs. Fucksmart, Nancy Bauer, Olivia, Pixie Bust, Sundae Morning, Twisted Cookies, Vanilla Riots, Vera Velvet, and Vivian Vice.
