PREENING is a slyly antagonizing joyful noise. The Oakland ensemble of Alejandra, Max, and Sam is alive with California blood and a contorted New York impulse à la ZE Records. It is appealingly compacted, an approach that betrays its punk pedigree (Violence Creeps, Flesh World, Uffizi), but its heart is refreshingly free. The saxophone sirens and caterwauls and levitates whole; the painterly drums follow tenacious bass leads. Preening is restless, expressive anxiety to instigate the coming age.
