Fools
Fools, a comic fable written by Neil Simon, will take the Plaza Playhouse Theater stage July 28th for six shows under the direction of David Holmes.
Set in the late 1800s, Fools puts schoolteacher Leon Tolchinsky (Stefan Wayne) in Kulyenchikov, a small Ukrainian village plagued with a 200-year-old curse that makes everyone dumb as dirt. Indeed, Tolchinsky falls in love with the beautiful Sophia (Eleanor Overby), who, when asked her favorite color, responds, "Yellow ... because it doesn't stick to your fingers as much."
And what language would Sophia like Leon to teach her? "Rabbit, I think," she decides.
Sophia's parents are supremely vapid, though they both seem to have a frustrated self-awareness of their situation (even while frequently confusing the word "curse" with "purse" and "nurse").
Leon still wants Sophia, but so does Count Gregor (Alex Hawkins). Gregor has the swagger of a Southern good ol' boy and the pomposity of someone who knows he is important, but is too stupid to know much else.
Leon has just 24 hours to break the curse lest he, too, become an idiot. It turns out there are only two ways to break the curse: Educate Sophia (who only has recently learned how to sit in a chair), or watch her marry the only descendant of the person who originally cast the curse - Count Gregor, of course.
Leon also has to navigate life in the village, which includes a fish-seller, a mail carrier, a magistrate, a butcher and a forgetful shepherd called Something Something Snetsky (Deborah Cristobal) - none of whom, of course, fully understand how to do their respective jobs.
Director David Holmes has acted and directed in the Santa Barbara Community since his arrival in 1980. He has directed 33 plays, 32 musicals, 29 talent shows and has mentored around 185 one-act plays. A lifelong advocate for the arts in public education, David continues to support and encourage a comprehensive arts curriculum for Kindergarten to grade 12. David is a graduate of UCSB in Dramatic Arts, earned his secondary teaching credential in 1984 and holds a lifetime credential to teach theater at any 2 year college.
Other cast members include Bob Larson as Slovitch, Allan Stewart-Oaten as Mishkin, Maia Mook as Yenchna, Van Riker as Dr. Zubritsky, and Claudia Kashin as Lenya.
Showdates for Fools are July 28, 29, 30 and August 4, 5 and 6. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 pm and Sunday matinees are at 3 pm. Tickets are $15.00 general admission, $12.00 senior or student and may be purchased online and at the theater box office one hour prior to showtime.
