FORGE: A Creative Music Series (7-22)
Forge creative music series presents music by the Twin Cities best musicians, composers and improvisers. It provides an outlet for music to be performed and written the way the artist envisioned without compromise. Too often the artist is asked to fit into a mold. The music presented in this series is honest, original and thought provoking. Be prepared to be surprised and inspired.
July guests: Amethyst 3 Byron Johnson-Blanchards Amethyst 3 focuses on the longstanding tradition of improvisation, using songs that range from originals to classic rock and jazz standards as catalysts for spontaneous musical interaction. The trio features some of the Twin Cities best improvising musicians who have performed with locally and regionally renowned bands such as High & Mighty, New Primitives and Bookhouse Trio. Greg Byers & Friends Greg Byers, M.M. uses his talents as a performer, composer, educator and producer to share the wisdom and beauty of great music with people of all backgrounds. He began his relationship with music at 2 1/2, when he began studying cello in the Suzuki method. In 2008 Greg became the first person in the history of University of Miami to double major in Instrumental Performance/Studio Music & Jazz on cello and bass, Summa Cum Laude. Since then he has performed on BBC Two (Later... with Jools Holland) and Univision (Latin GRAMMYs); been a featured artist/clinician at New Directions Cello Festival, Creative Strings Workshop, and Mark Wood's Rock Orchestra Camp; arranged strings for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Birth of a Ghost by Omar Rodriguez Lopez. His latest project is the creation of a suite for chamber ensemble and tasting menu featuring Cafe Alma, where every movement is paired with an hors doeuvres; funded by the Artist's Initiative Grant through the Minnesota State Arts Board.
