**** Faun Fables *** A Psych-Folk/Freak Folk/Gothic Folk on Drag City "Oaklands Faun Fables arent really a folk group, but theres no adequate name for the music Dawn and Nils make together, music that is so total, otherworldy, and heretical a vision of traditional music that it can only be compared to THE RESIDENTS version of rock n roll. Frykdahls instrumental virtuosity is strictly in the service of making every sound youve ever heard unfamiliar. This band has the uncanny ability to blow through original songs, ancient ballads and European avant garde numbers in a set without a single note seeming out of place. Even if you dont like traditional music, avant garde music, or music at all, you still need to hear McCarthys voice, which will kill you dead." - L.A. Weekly (Oliver Hall)

*** Paul Fonfara *** from Painted Saints (formerly of 16 Horsepower/Wovenhand and Devotchka) "Fonfaras magnetic playing provided the evocative embellishment you didnt realise a song could benefit from until you heard it. The occasional use of looping gave the (mostly) sad songs an otherworldly veneer." - The Scotsman, Glasgow
"Fonfara's unique stylings could be heard as some gentle perversion of Americana into modern, individualistic song". - Vijay Venkat, The Guardian London

----------- FAUN FABLES bio
Faun Fables are time-travelers from another era, somehow more aligned with the power and allure of Earth than is usual in our day and age. Turning heads and ears since 1998, theyve spent a good part of the last few decades touring North America and Europe, with time in Israel, Australia and New Zealand. Their latest album, HYPERLINK "http://www.dragcity.com/products/born-of-the-sun" Born of the Sun, (2016) is their seventh release on DRAG CITY RECORDS, and fairly bursts at the seams with colors and shades all their own. DAWN McCARTHYs voice, which The New Yorker described as one of the more compelling instruments in contemporary music," can open hearts and minds with a whisper to a rallying battle cry into her mythical world, animated by the experimental musicality of her partner NILS FRYKDAHL (Free Salamander Exhibit, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) with his electric guitars, bass, flutes, and rich, weathered vocals. When not traveling together as a family, they raise their three daughters in Sonoma County, California.

-------- Paul Fonfara
7 Secrets of Snow is the fourth record by songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Paul Fonfara. 7 Secrets of Snow finds Fonfara exploring new compositional and songwriting territory on a grand scale; the record features a full-fledged chamber orchestra and Balkan styled brass band playing a surreal cinematic score. 7 Secrets of Snow is the raucous, yet delicate and sincere Pet Sounds of spaghetti western and heroin klezmer meeting with shoegaze psychedelia, sci-fi, and contemporary 20th Century minimalism. Fonfara began his career in Denver, CO playing clarinet, cello and guitar with DeVotchka and Woven Hand/16 Horsepower, as well as accompanist to alt-county stalwart Jim White. He then later moved to Minneapolis, MN to join local favorites The Spaghetti Western String Co., and the Brass Messengers. All the while he has recorded a number of albums leading his own band Painted Saints, also touring often as a soloist, noted for his virtuosic whistling, clarinet, looping and non conventional lyrics. In September of 2013, Fonfara was touring in the UK opening for Jim White where he met with the film makers behind the BBC cult classic Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus. They were working on a new documentary following the famous/notorious Russian clown Slava Polunin as he makes a homeward trek through Siberia in the middle of winter. After hearing Fonfara perform, he was asked to score the film, but it ran into serious production delays. In the meantime, Fonfara won a Minnesota Artists Initiative grant using the scores sketches to record his own record, create his own films and illustrate the collection. The result is 7 Secrets of Snow - owing its title to a Russian proverb and the original London based film. To realize the compositions, Fonfara assembled The Ipsifendus Collective, which takes its name from an Edward Gorey story. Ipsifendus is the sound a charming devil makes as it descends from the sky. The orchestra is made up of some of Minneapolis most prolific and notable composers/musicians playing accordion, cello, clarinet, cornet, piano, bass, drums, saw, along with Honk Festival favorites the Brass Messengers. While the records inspiration began in composing for Siberian winter-scapes, it soon took on its own life, and each piece its own world. The Grass(DeGrasse) is Always Greener is a nod to physicist Neil Degrasse Tyson. Tar Sands, the lone vocal song, is a serene take on the desolate beauty of the waste that is the Alberta oil pits. Housitania comes from a short story about the sinking of the Housitonic, the first vessel to be sunk by a submarine during the civil war, where both crews perished. The record also includes a book of illustrations by renowned Minneapolis artist Whittney Streeter. The group performs live to the accompanying films. The release of this record corresponds with a busy schedule as Fonfara will be touring solo supporting a West Coast run with Cloud Cult, dates in the Deep South with Jim White, and with the orchestra, will be supporting Romanias
