La Traviata
Giuseppe Verdi's legendary tale of a beautiful courtesan torn between love and honor
A fascinating production of Giuseppe Verdi's classic opera captured in HD at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen. In Verdi's thrilling adaptation of the Dumas novel La dame aux camelias, Violetta gives up her luxurious lifestyle as a kept woman to experience true love with Alfredo - until his family comes between them. The dazzling production, set in a rustically romantic Roman quarry, boasts 200,000 plus visitors a season. Stage designer Manfred Waba sets the tragic story about the demi-mondaine Violetta Valéry and her admirer Alfredo Germont in an evocative replica of the Parisian Opéra Garnier. His and Robert Herzl's unique interpretation is intelligent and effective. In the lead roles, Austria's opera talent Kristiane Kaiser and Jean-François Borras, a French young tenor, provide for a musically and visually exciting performance.
