Side by Side: The Science, Art, and Impact of Digital Cinema
An entertaining and eye-opening exploration of the digital revolutionand what it means to the future of the movies In Person: Filmmaker CHRIS KENNEALLY For almost one hundred year, movies were shot, edited and projected using photochemical film. But over the last two decades a digital process has emerged to challenge photochemical filmmaking. SIDE BY SIDE, a new documentary produced by Keanu Reeves, takes an in-depth look at this revolution. At this moment when digital and photochemical filmmaking coexist, SIDE BY SIDE explores what has been gained, what is lost, and what the future might bring. This eye-opening film features interviews with Steven Soderbergh, James Cameron, David Lynch, Richard Linklater, Martin Scorsese, Lana and Andy Wachowski, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Greta Gerwig, George Lucas, Robert Rodriguez, Michael Chapman, Vittorio Storaro, Michael Ballhaus, Lars von Trier, John Malkovich, Danny Boyle, Walter Murch, Vilmos Zsigmond, Lena Dunham, Joel Schumacher, Barry Levinson, and more. The Cinema Arts Centre has been preparing for the digital revolution and is in the midst of one of the most critical fundraising endeavors in our history. The 2012 Vic Skolnick Life of the Cinema Campaign truly is about the Life of the Cinema, as we raise funds for our programs, operations and to purchase digital projectors for our three theaters. In the summer of 2013, movies will no longer be produced or distributed on 35mm film stock. We must be prepared to present movies in the digital format in order to continue to operate.
