Crown Heights Homebrew Tour
Despite New York's gnat-size apartments, NYC homebrewers refuse to let space limitations detract them from their mission: crafting some of the city's tastiest beer. On this tour, you'll venture inside the homes of three of the city's finest amateur brewers, who will display their set-ups, discuss their craft and, most importantly, open up their stash of superlative beer.
Today's tour will take us through Crown Heights, Brooklyn. We'll meet electrical engineering student and ace homebrewer Zach Gonzalez-Ruskiewicz, Ben Kainz and Ariel Schwarz-Kainz -- the couple specializes in Belgian- and German-style beers and IPAs -- and Otto Berkes Jr., who makes the kind of beers you want to crush by the six-pack.
Note: Today's guide will be Sheri Lyn, a founding member of homebrew club the Brewminaries.
Eat a big lunch before the tour, for you will be drinking so very many beers. And wear some comfortable walking shoes. Today is going to be a blast.
BIOS:
Sheri Lyn started brewing in 2011 after drinking her way through Western Europe and volunteering at a hop farm and brewery in rural Tasmania. She was drawn to brewing because it incorporates her favorite things: the environment, science, cooking, and drinking beer! She is a founding member and first Dictator of the Brewminaries, the largest home brewing club in New York City. She enjoys exploring the diverse markets of Brooklyn to find unique ingredients to put in her "Dubious Hooch". She has a soft spot for Australian hops and mostly brews sessionable beer. When not brewing, she spends her days as an environmental scientist working in water quality protection.
Zach Gonzalez-Ruskiewicz is an Electrical Engineering student at NYU. After drinking his way through the local grocery store's craft beer selection in college, he picked up homEbrewing after graduating. Before long, his tiny NYC room was dedicated only to sleeping and beer. Sometimes he fantasizes about moving to the suburbs and having a whole garage to turn into a homebrewery. However, homebrewing in NYC requires an intimacy with the craft that brings the hobby closer to the heart.
Ben Kainz and Ariel Schwarz-Kainz have been brewing since they moved to New York almost four years ago. Ben comes from a beer-loving family in rural Germany, so he was naturally drawn to the craft. Ariel was first inspired to start brewing because of some of the amazing craft beer coming out of her home state, Minnesota. They are both active members of the Brewminaries and Ariel moonlights at Bitter & Esters homebrew shop on weekends. They love to share their hobby and push their brewing skills further by entering into competitions and experimenting with different styles. Ariel likes to brew malt-forward and Belgian-style beers, while Ben dabbles with German styles and IPAs.
Otto Berkes Jr. started making beer in 2013 because of a curiosity about the process and science of brewing. He brews drinkable beers that showcase their ingredients, and he compensates for limited time and space by paring down his brewing system to the bare minimum. Otto is also a brewer at Strong Rope Brewery.
