Dmitri Matheny Group
Celebrated for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, Dmitri Matheny was first introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protégé of Art Farmer. Matheny has since matured into "one of the jazz world's most talented horn players" (SF Chronicle).
JAZZ NOIR, a fresh spin on crime jazz, film noir and timeless classics. Mysterious, melancholy and menacing, the Papillon/BluePort Jazz release is Matheny's 11th album as leader and his most thrilling to date. Film noir just happens to be the flugelhornists forte, as a fan growing up on the stuff himself and as an internationally recognized composer, arranger, and producer.
The coolest part of Matheny's Jazz Noir years in the making, really is in the two spoken word pieces, Film Noir and Crime Scenes, where the flugelhornist and his band weave their original scores through stories of a femme fatale on the prowl for the next fix and a darkly romanticized city by the bay where anything can happen.
