Great Discussions -- Nationalism vs. Globalism -- Facilitated by Victor Lewis
Thursday July 6, 2017 10am - 12 noon Union Bank, San Luis Obispo
Great Discussions 2017 is a highly participatory course designed for those informed and thoughtful people among us who love to engage in real discussion and respectful debate over issues of the day. This course is a forum for exchanging ideas about international and domestic public affairs and America's place in the world.
The subject of this meeting will be "Nationalism vs. Globalism: The New Political Divide"
Up to recently, globalization was accepted to be a natural effect of international people, product, information and finance flows. Nationalism was not at issue because globalization appeared to be in the national interest. The election of Donald Trump has changed the terms of debate: national interest vs. globalization, and elevated Nationalism as the regimes central policy concept. Trump adviser Steve Bannon has postulated that the categories of Liberal and Conservative are being replaced by the categories of Nationalism vs. Globalism. Trump echoes with America First!
This two-hour Great Discussion will consist of a half hour of video presentation followed by group discussion The video is a Ted Talk by Yuval Harari, author of the new book, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow. His talk considers the relevance of globalism and nationalism in dealing with the real problems of the nation and the world. With this discussion we will try to find a way forward as Americans, by looking at where we are now and where weve been in history.
Discussion questions will include:
-- Do you agree that Nationalism vs. Globalism is replacing or should replace conceptions of Liberal vs. Conservative in national policy debate and formulation?
-- Are these categories just another way of polarizing us and them?
-- Given that Nationalism vs Globalism are legitimate contrasting categories, where have we been on that scale?
-- How should we balance national interest and international relations?
The group will be limited to 30 participants to encourage dialogue (and because thats all the chairs).
