Mosaic Dance Theater & The Music of Maurice Chedid
Oud virtuoso/singer/composer Maurice Chedid and the directors of Mosaic Dance Theater Company, Samara Adell (Artistic Director for Dance and Choreographer) and Morgiana Celeste Varricchio (Producing Artistic Director and Founder), have a long history of collaboration, not only as individuals in their pre-Mosaic days, but also under the auspices of the Company.
"Mosaic Dance Theater & The Music of Maurice Chedid" is a triumphant new work, acknowledging these fruitful artistic collaborations. This joyous concert features Maurices original compositions played by an on-stage ensemble of four musicians, with Samaras thrilling choreography for the cast of five dancers. Premiering in December 2017, this masterwork presentation includes the fascinating rhythms, evocative melodies and luxuriant movements of classical, folkloric, and contemporary styles of music and dance from the Arab world. The concert highlight will be the double premiere MDTCs new dance work set to Maurices new composition "Ma Bi," in the classical muwashshah genre accompanied by a live musical performance. In addition, the other dance pieces offer the audience a diverse program of Middle Eastern dance styles through Maurices compositions: Lebanese dabke, Egyptian saiidi, baladi, raks sharqi, as well as the classical muwashshah. Maurice will accompany Samara in a live taksim (improvisation) for oud and dancer. He will also provide accompaniment for Morgiana as she tells the folktale of Mohammed the Muallim. The musicians will be featured in live musical interludes of Maurices songs and instrumental pieces.
Performing in the concert are Mosaic Company dancers Samara, Morgiana Celeste, Nina Brewton, Kendra Dushac-McCarthy, and guest dancer Heather Panikkar. In addition to Mr. Chedid, musicians in the ensemble are Rami Nasser (keyboard), Ramy ElAasser (tabla), and April Centrone (percussion).
