The Educated Eater: Mission Driven Distribution Thursday, December 6, 6:30-8 p.m. Jimmy's No. 43 43 E. 7th Street Free and open to the public RSVP
When Greenmarket was founded in 1976, it offered struggling regional farmers an opportunity to sell directly to customers in the New York City marketplacea far more lucrative option than relying on wholesale accounts that didn't meet the farmer's bottom line. Those direct sales saved more than a few family farms. Now, with a raised national awareness about the value of eating and buying locally, non-profit GrowNYC has returned to the question of wholesale, this time with a new solution: Greenmarket Co., a non-profit mission-driven wholesale distribution program. In this conversation about the challenges and triumphs of buying and selling local food on a wholesale scale, hear from buyers in the city, upstate farmers, and the connections that help the two forge business relationships to make sure the delivery gets from farm to table.
Panelists: Michael Anthony, executive chef Gramercy Tavern Olivia Blanchflower, project manager Greenmarket Co. Bruce Davenport, farmer Davenport Farms Lynn Loflin, executive chef Lenox Hill Neighborhood House
Moderator: Marcel Van Ooyen, executive director, GrowNYC
