W H A T I S S O L O P E R F O R M A N C E?
Beyond stand-up and storytelling, solo theater creates casts of thousands - plus special effects - all bursting from a single performer. The results are hilarious and soulful, passionate and provocative, ablaze with personal visions.
IRMA HERRERA ------------------------------------------------------- "Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name?"
Shelley, the receptionist at the financial district law firm where I work, hands me two message slips when I return from lunch. "Ear-ma can I ask you a favor? When your friends call the office tell them to say their names in English." One message is from Susana, my best friend; the other from a client. I count to three and take a deep breath. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference . . . Where the hell do I start this conversation.
REHA ZAMANI ------------------------------------------------------- Dont call me Fashia Lelia is all grown up and trying to figure out the difference between being a Fashia and a respectable lady. She asks her cousin Shelia for advice about the best way to meet men. "You want to meet guys, you have to go more and more to bars with your girlfriends. You have to work out and lose your love handles. You asked me so I'm not going to sugar coat this for you. Guys don't like girls with love handles and you can't wear that black eyeliner. it makes you look like a What will Leliah do? Be a Fashia or be the person everyone else wants her to be?
WENDY TAYLOR ------------------------------------------------------- "Namaste Motherfuckers"
When my father got sick with cancer, I moved to New York City to take care of him. It wasn't easy. Once in a while, I would swipe a morphine pill...or 2, or 3, and visit my friend Travis in Chelsea. We'd do the morphine, drink some white wine and watch "Sex in the City. It's ok to use a little morphine when you're 40 and living on a pullout sofa while caring for your Dad who has cancer, isn't it?
DARA M. WILSON ------------------------------------------------------- "Escaping Squares and Circle"
Tentatively, Dara sits across from the small man behind the giant desk. After years of berating and bigotry at a Bay Area tech giant, she's interviewing for the only job she can do: television watching. Martin Crane, the father of a certain Seattle Psychiatrist, holds the keys to the castle, but Dara doesn't know if she has what it takes to impress the man in the green easy-chair. She opens her mouth to speak and wonders what will come out: Winning words? Or just tossed salads and scrambled eggs?
