What if ghosts took control of fate? What if, suddenly, everyone was living in "happily ever after:" the neediest couple in town wins the lottery jackpot; mistreated dogs don't cower and run, but bite back; long-suffering women quietly leave their boorish husbands and run off with more attractive men. In a small French town, all this happens after the Ghost appears.

Isabel, a young teacher, entices the Ghost to visit her, and together they plan to awaken the legions of departed spirits. Isabel wants to take the world by storm, sweeping it clean of the cobwebs of bureaucracy and senseless rules, to make a bright new world where all can live free of fear and embrace joy. But the strange reversals of fate have caught the attention of the government, and the Inspector is sent to put things right, by proving that spirits do not exist, and that the Ghost is actually alive. A comic battle for the heart and soul of the town and of Isabel begins. Will she fully join with the Ghost, even if that means death? Will the Inspector prove that the Ghost is just an escaped criminal? Or will a local municipal employee finally find the courage to confess his true love to Isabel and ask her to marry him?
