Tribute! Celebrating the songs of Central Coast Favorite Jim Conroy
Jim Conroy has played many of our tribute nights at the Steynberg (Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell). Now we're turning the tables, and hosting a tribute to his music. Performers include Jill Knight, Inga Swearingen, Joe Pilloud (of Big Daddy's Blues Band), Bob & Wendy, Julia & Brett Mitchell, Rob Kimball, Melanie Statom, Ramona Ault, Billy Baxmeyer, Tracy Morgan, Steve Key, and Jim Himself. Tickets are $15 general admission, available for advance purchase at the venue, Steynberg Gallery, 1531 Monterey St., San Luis Obispo, 805.547.0278. The gallery has a cafe serving dinners, desserts, beer, and wine. Doors open at 6pm.
A Central Coast resident since 1989, Jim Conroy currently performs in the trio Burning, Bad & Cool, as well as Jim Conroy & The Mystery Brothers. In the early '90s, he was the leader of a number of R&B and country bands: The Moments, The Convictions, The Moonstone Cowboys and the acoustic duo Shim & Jim. In 1995, he released the CD Convinced, a mixture of R&B, gospel and country pop. For seven years he was a member of the San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble, and was often a featured soloist with that group, joining them on tours of the British Isles and Canada. He formed the popular group The Irish Potatoheads with members of VAE, and delighted many an audience with their own version of Celtic music. He earned a respected place in the Jazz community, leading the Jim Conroy Quartet and producing the annual Jazz Vocal Summit for the SLO Jazz Federation.
