Formed in 2010 by mezzo-soprano Alyssa Anderson and guitarist Joseph Spoelstra, the dream songs project has performed in venues across the Midwest. The duo programs a wide range of repertoire, including guitar transcriptions of lute songs and opera arias, classical and romantic art songs written for the instrument, as well as modern pieces and newly commissioned works for the ensemble. In 2012, the dream songs project was awarded a Metropolitan Community Arts Council Community Arts Grant to fund a series of performances focusing on voice and guitar pieces by Minnesota composers and to fund a commission for a new piece for the duo by composer Daniel Nass. This award was made possible because of the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund, part of Minnesota's 2009 Legacy Amendment. Through the incubator program of Springboard for the Arts, the dream songs project is a not-for-profit organization.
This activity is funded, in part, by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State's general fund, and its arts and cultural heritage fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
