AMERICAN FOLK HOLIDAY: Carols & Songs from New England, Appalachia & the Shakers - PHILADELPHIA PERFORMANCE
Seattle's Tudor Choir celebrates the season with AMERICAN FOLK HOLIDAY, a fun and lively performance of early American music from New England, Appalachian, and Shaker traditions. AMERICAN FOLK HOLIDAY is a perfect performance for families, friends, and children to celebrate the holiday season. Raucous tunes in the shapenote tradition; simple, heartfelt Shaker melodies; and the proud and vigorous New England "primitive" style will take the audience on a journey discovering holiday fare from the variety of traditions that combine to create America's vital and inspiring musical heritage. This narrated performance features songs and carols for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year.
This performance is part of the Tudor Choir's East Coast Tour and will mark the ensemble's Philadelphia debut following its Kennedy Center debut on December 14.
ABOUT THE TUDOR CHOIR
In addition to their performances of Renaissance polyphony, Doug Fullington and the Tudor Choir have established themselves as leading interpreters of early American music. Their Shapenote Album is regarded as a definitive professional recording of the shapenote genre and is regularly featured on National Public Radio. The Tudor Choir has performed shapenote music live on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. The choir's Shaker CD Gentle Words "triumphs on every level" (Craig Ziegler in Fanfare): "If you care about American music or the art of sublime choral singing, I implore you to buy this recording." The choir's An American Christmas, from which many songs for AMERICAN FOLK HOLIDAY are drawn, has received rave reviews in the U.S. and United Kingdom. David Stabler writes in The Oregonian: "The vigorous beauty of shape-note singing seems apt for Christmas. Most traditional carols come from Germany and Victorian England, but these New England and Appalachian songs were once as familiar to rural Americans as 'Silent Night.'"
