Houston Urban Adventures' Heart of the Tunnel Walk
Start your weekday Houston Urban Adventure inside Georgia's Market, a unique restaurant, grocery store, and bar inside a 1934 building. Then follow your local guide down Main Street and into the 1929 Chase Building, which features 8 historic frescoes depicting Texas and and Houston history, a dramatic Art Moderne banking hall, and portraits of twelve heroes of the Texas Revolution.
Next, go 20 feet underground and stroll through a section of the Downtown Houston Tunnel System, which connects 83 buildings spread out over 7 miles. Then ride an elevator up to Chase Tower's 60th-floor sky lobby. At 75 stories, Chase Tower is the tallest building in Houston and the tallest building in Texas. Photo opportunities include Houston's skyline and three Joan Miro sculptures.
Walk across Milam Street and enter the soaring glass lobby of Pennzoil Place, Philip Johnson's 1976 modern masterpiece. Ride an escalator back down to the Tunnel and walk to One Shell Plaza, enjoying an optional shopping opportunity along the way. Go outside and walk to the Visitors Center inside Houston's 1939 City Hall. Here, you'll find restrooms, free literature, and Houston and Texas souvenirs.
Return to the Tunnel and walk under Wells Fargo Plaza, a 71-story office tower clad in a rare blue-green glass, to 919 Milam's food court, where you can enjoy an optional 30-minute Dutch-treat lunch. Continue underground back to Chase Tower, then exit the Tunnel, where you'll find yourself just a few blocks away from Georgia's Market, MetroRail, the Theater District, and the Old Town of Houston.
