Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig and El Rio. The show, now in its 9th year, takes place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District and showcases an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent, progressive comedians from the Bay Area and beyond.
The June 15th show is The 8th Annual Obligatory June Gay Comedy Show and features: Tom Ammiano, Mimi Gonzalez, Nick Leonard, Julia Jackson, and Lisa Geduldig.
Tom Ammiano, The Mother of Gay Comedy, has been a stand up comic since 1980 when he pioneered gay comedy night at the Valencia Rose in San Francisco. He is also a legendary SF leader who has served the city for four decades as a teacher, School Board President, President of the SF Board of Supervisors, and has had an unmatched record of achievement as a member of the State Assembly. In 1975, Tom came out as the first openly gay teacher in SF. In 1977 he worked on the No on 6 campaign with Harvey Milk, successfully defeating an anti-gay initiative to ban gay teachers in California. Tom went on to be elected to the SF Board of Education from 1990-1994, the Board of Supervisors from 1994-2008, and was elected to the California State Assembly in 2008. Tom has been at the forefront of reform on many issues including affordable housing, LGBTQ rights, education, labor, immigration, prisons, and marijuana. He has given a voice to underrepresented communities throughout his career.
Mimi Gonzalez has been rocking the mic at Prides and protests to cruises and festivals since before being gay was spelled with three letters. She welcomes everyone in the acronym of GLBT etc through her fierce politics of inclusion. Her life-long agitation and activism is expressed in print through queer and diversity and inclusion magazines and as a stand up comic on nationally televised shows. She has been called one of the funniest comics in NYC by Backstage Magazine, and Provincetown Magazine says shes Funny, sexy, sharp, positive... Mimi Gonzalez is a comic, life-affirming force. www.MimiGonzalez.com
Nick Leonard performs his dry and sly humor at clubs around California and all over the world including Marsh Theater, NYU, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The San Francisco Fringe Festival, and the Vancouver International Comedy Festival. He is the co-founder of the QComedy Showcase (currently on hiatus) and the popular Bilarious Show in the National Queer Arts Festival. He also performs regularly as his alter ego Ginorma Desmond.
Julia Jackson grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father came from Harlem, and her mother came from a dairy farm in Whitewater, Wisconsin. She says, How could I not be funny with that pedigree? You laugh or you cry, folks. I chose humor. I wound up in the only place that would take me: San Francisco. Its actually home to the Intelligent Female Relocation Program. Her solo show, Children are Forever (All Sales Final), about the trials and tribulations of adopting a baby had a successful run at Stagewerx in SF and won Best Non-Fiction Show at United Solo in 2016. She is a regular guest on the Brian Copeland Show on KGO Radio on Fridays 3-4pm. www.juliajackson.com
