Berkeley Chamber Opera presents The Consul An opera by Gian Carlo Menotti
Friday July 14th 7pm Sunday July 16th 2pm
Berkeley Hillside Club 2286 Cedar St., Berkeley CA
With a subject as relevant today as it was in 1950, Gian Carlo Menotti brings to life the horror of a family fleeing political persecution in their home country. Faced with an endless and inhumane vetting process for visas, they endure the agony of an uncertain future. The opera won a pulitzer prize for music and ran on Broadway for nearly 8 months in 1950.
"In endless waiting rooms the hour stands still, the light goes pale and thin, the heart is dead. Leave the doors unlocked and light the lamp within. Give us back the earth and make us free" -Menotti
Review of BCO's last production: "In every aspect - singing, orchestra, staging, costumes, acting this production demonstrated what great things a small opera company can do."
-James MacBean, Berkeley Daily Planet
