The 5th Wind
"The 5th Wind", by local playwright Marvin Gonzalez, tells the story of two neighbors in the basement of an apartment building in the early 1960's coping with unrequited love. Montalban, a poet played by John Frederick, starts the play one step away from ending his life, his heart broken by Annabel (Kate Atack). Montalban's neighbor, Sorensen, the building janitor played by Scott Rankin, stumbles into the suicide scene and crudely but effectively talks his neighbor down. What is revealed in the alternately comic and depressing exchange is a love triangle punctuated by Annabel's presence as a voice, a memory, and as an ideal of love so unfitting to the universe of these two men the outcomes are as silly as they are heartbreaking. A comedy this dark could only happen in the basement.
This production is the first in GLM's Playwright In Residence program highlighting one local playwright per season to develop new work. Marvin Gonzalez recently premiered "Mattress of the Heart" at The Potentialists Workshop. Some may also remember his updated variation of Frankenstein with GLM's "Frankenstein, or The Modern Gay Prometheus" in October of 2012.
