ECHO New Year Concert
On January 6th 2013 the Essex Chamber Orchestra will pay its first visit to Sevenoaks, to perform in the wonderful new purpose-built Pamoja Hall, part of the new Performing Arts Centre (the SPACE) at Sevenoaks School.
Originally founded in 1979 as a vehicle for members of the Essex Youth Orchestra to continue music-making after reaching the age of 21, the Essex Chamber Orchestra has developed over its 30-years into one of the UK's leading amateur Orchestras, varying its forces to perform a wide variety of programmes ranging from Baroque and Classical works to the repertoire of the 21st Century.
Conducted by well-known Sevenoaks musician Brynly Clarke, the concert will begin with the Serenade for Small Orchestra by the Hungarian composer Leo Weiner, a delicious piece with elements of the Viennese style, tinged with Hungarian folk-music.  Then the wind and percussion principals of the Orchestra demonstrate their virtuosity in the Concerto for Seven Wind, Percussion & Strings by the Swiss composer Frank Martin.  Written in 1949, in a very accessible idiom, this unusual format allows the individual soloists to shine while combining the colours in imaginative ways; it fuses German, French, and jazz influences into a very audience-friendly and satisfying whole.  The second half of the concert will feature one of the greatest works in the repertoire, Beethoven's magnificent 'Eroica' Symphony, no 3 in E Flat Major, written in homage to Napoleon, but with its dedication page torn out by the composer on hearing that its dedicatee had proclaimed himself Emperor.
The concert is intended to be, as well as a wonderful evening of music-making, a fund-raising event for Alzheimer's Society. Alzheimer's Society is a membership organisation, which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Many of our 25,000 members have personal experience of dementia, as carers, health professionals or people with dementia themselves, and their experiences help to inform our work.
