Event

Dance Now Boston/NYC
Friday night:  Various performances by Boston choreographers, Jimena Bermejo, Carey McKinley, McKersin Previlus, and Subject:Matter by Ian Berg.

Sunday night: New Yorks LMnO3 (Deborah Lohse, Cori Marquis and Donnell Oakley).

The mission of Dance Now Boston/NYC is to commission new dances from Boston choreographers, to create a touring corridor between New York and Boston, and to give life to a range of new dance visions  all created for cabaret-style stages in both cities. Our commitment is to mutual inspiration between artists, which will, in turn, invigorate new audiences in both cities.

The concept for Dance Now Boston/NYC was envisioned by David Parker and Jeffrey Kazin, directors of The Bang Group (TBG), an award-winning rhythm-driven dance company based in New York City. Dance Now Boston/NYC aims to be an incubator of new work and an artistic exchange spanning the Boston and New York City dance communities.

For the past decade Dance Now NYC has been commissioning contemporary choreographers from the concert stage to create work especially for the cabaret stage at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater. The notion of bringing genuine concert dance to celebratory settings inspired several choreographers to create work outside their own usual practices in response to the conditions of cabaret  the spaces are small and the audiences are lively.

David Parker was among the first choreographers commissioned by Dance Now NYC, and found himself energized and renewed  inspired to bring smart, adventurous work to the intimate cabaret environment. He cut loose and made work that surprised and delighted without yielding any of its rigor. David and other choreographers have been transformed by this challenge, and audiences are transformed as they experience and embrace dance in a new setting.

With the support and participation of Dance Now NYC, TBG launched Dance Now Boston in 2013 at the American Repertory Theatres Oberon. The company has since expanded to the The Dance Complex Studio 7, which is transformed into an urban boite  a place where audiences experience dance in a dynamic cabaret setting.

In the last decade, Boston's dance scene has exploded. There has been an influx of young dancers to the city along with the flowering of many of Boston's mid-career choreographers. David Parker's decades-long involvement with this community, through teaching, mentoring, choreographing, performing and producing convinced him that the time is ripe for a formal commissioning program  one that will give young choreographers resources to create new work for the cabaret setting.
