Hand-Picked is an exhibition of 111 photographs and 33 sculptures devoted to the subject of hands, all from Henry M. Buhls collection. In over 20 years, Buhl has gathered a vast collection of images, eclectic furnishings, sculptures, books, and myriad curiosities and objects all inspired by the hand. Southampton Arts Center is honored to play host to many of his most treasured works during this very special exhibition.
The Buhl Collection began in October 1993 with Henry Buhls purchase of Alfred Stieglitzs photograph of Georgia OKeeffes hands entitled Hands and Thimble, 1920. Inspired by this iconic picture, his collection developed around the theme of hands and grew to include over 1,100 photographs at its height.
Encompassing the history of photography, The Buhl Collection has works dating from 1840 to the present, and includes the most recognized masters of the medium as well as lesser-known and emerging artists. Partly because of the metaphorical theme of the collection hands and the commitment to represent as many artistic styles as possible, the collection has come to be regarded as a unique example of the vast spectrum of 19th and 20th century photographic art. More recently, Mr. Buhl has been concentrating his collecting on sculpture and has already accumulated a significant variety of the medium consistent with the same theme.
From June September of 2004, a major exhibition of photographs from The Buhl Collection entitled Speaking With Hands was on view at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The exhibition then went on an international tour from 2005-7 to venues including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, the Folkwang Museum in Essen, Germany and finally to Russia where it was shown at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. In conjunction with the exhibit, the Guggenheim published a catalogue including 174 images from the collection. In 2008, an exhibition of both photography and sculpture entitled A Show of Hands was shown at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida and most recently, from 2009 2011 an exhibition of approximately 150 works from the collection toured Asia with shows at museums in Korea, Taiwan and Macao.
Along with being an art collector, Henry Buhl is also an active philanthropist. In 1992, he founded the not-for-profit organization, Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (ACE) in New York City, which provides job training and placement for homeless men and women.
