Butterfly
Catch Wanderlust Theater Lab's last production in the D.C. area before their New York premier of Tom Block's first play, White Noise, June-July, 2013!
Wanderlust Theater Lab will be producing the second play in Tom Block's trilogy of the same name: Butterfly, February 15, 16, 22 and 23, 2013. The play is directed by Wanderlust Theater Lab founder Roselie Vasquez-Yetter. Butterfly explores the final day of a self-appointed prophet, Todd (half-Black and half-Jewish), a once promising professional baseball player who answered a call to prophecy fifteen years before. The play takes place in the suburban Washington D.C. living room of the house he grew up in, with his single acolyte (a Serbian refugee), a therapist, a medieval Muslim mystic (Ibn Sina) he has called back from the dead, the bubbly Martini, a beautician, his mother, invisible father and other characters that help bring his quest for prophecy to resolution. "Butterfly," received its first reading at the Kennedy Center (Washington DC) on September 3, 2012. This will be its world premier production. The play will be accompanied by an original score written and played by cellist Desiree Miller. Butterfly is the second of a trilogy exploring the intersection between human spiritual urges and contemporary society. The work will also feature a series of paintings from his "In the Garden of the Mystical Redoubt," which visually represent the psychic experience of the characters, as they either succumb to or reject the teachings of the self-appointed spiritual leader. Block's first play, White Noise, has been chosen to be produced as a "Resident Theater Production" at Theater for the New City in the East Village, New York in June-July, 2013.
