Introduction to Lichens and Lichen Identification
What is that green and white frosty looking stuff you always see clinging to oak trees? Answer: amazing organisms called lichens! If you want to know what lichens are, where they grow, how they reproduce, and how to identify them, this is the workshop for you! Expert Sonoma County lichenologist Shelly Benson will enlighten you with the biology, ecology, and identification of these weird and wonderful composite organisms. As the former President of the California Lichen Society, Shelly has been studying lichens for the past 16 years. She earned her MS degree from the University of Northern British Columbia where she studied lichens growing in the treetops of old growth forests in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This class includes a lecture, a field exploration, and lab time to identify lichens. The excursion will be 1-3 miles at a slow pace.
