Slavyanka Russian Chorus and Iskra Etno present: Garland
Featuring songs by the Slavyanka Men's, Women's and Mixed Choruses, Garland encompasses music by Russian composers Pavel Chesnokov and Sergei Taneyev and the "Father of Serbian Music," Stevan Mokranjac.
The liturgical portion of the concert includes works primarily by Chesnokov, including the well known and loved piece "Sovet Prevechnij" (The Pre-Eternal Counsel) and the antiphon "Dostojno Jest" (It Is Truly Meet). From Taneyev's works, the Chorus will perform two transcendalist evening songs and an except from Taneyev's cantata, St. John of Damascus. The folk portion of the concert includes excerpts from Mokranjac's "Rukovet" (Garland) -- compositions that illustrate a rich tapestry of life in villages in Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Bosnia.
Iskra Etno, a Serbian vocal ensemble, will present additional pieces that are emblematic of Serbian singing styles.
Tickets are $17 in advance, $20 at the door; children 11 and under are admitted free (but please reserve a ticket for them).
