ASCE COPRI Seattle Chapter Monthly Dinner Meeting - May 24, 2017
Topic:
USS Arizona Memorial  Access Dock Replacement

Description:
Located at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial hosts nearly 1.8 million visitors each year making it one of the most frequently visited destinations in Hawaii. The Memorial is built over the remains of the battleship USS Arizona to honor the 1,177 crewmen killed onboard during the attack by Japanese Naval Forces on December 7, 1941.

Access to this historically and culturally significant monument is provided by a Park Service ferry that transports visitors from shore to a floating dock connected to the monument. In 2015, the National Park Service solicited design-build proposals for replacement of the existing concrete dock after it was damaged in a vessel collision.

This presentation will chronicle the development and construction of the replacement floating dock which was fabricated in Bellingham, Washington and shipped to Hawaii for assembly and installation at the site.  The replacement floating dock is constructed using post-tensioned segmental concrete methods similar to highway bridges, and utilizes expanded polystyrene as both a forming material and to provide positive buoyancy under all conditions.

Speaker:
Patrick Staron, PE, PhD

Since joining Redpoint Structures in 2013, Mr. Staron has designed a variety of marine structures including floating marinas, building platforms, mooring structures, and concrete piers.  Prior to Redpoint Structures, Mr. Staron worked as an engineer for Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates. His duties included assessment and repair of deteriorated structures ranging from piers and wharves to communication towers and stadiums. Mr.
Staron has also conducted graduate research examining concrete fatigue and the mechanics of snow.
