KGNU's 29th Annual Charles Sawtelle Memorial Mountain Jam
Slow-cooked Texas-style barbeque, vegetarian options, side salads, homemade desserts and micro-brew beers from Avery Brewing will accompany amazing acoustic music at the Gold Hill Inn for KGNUs 29th Annual Charles Sawtelle Memorial Mountain Jam.
A KGNU tradition, The Charles is named for Hot Rize guitarist Charles Sawtelle, who helped start the event in 1989 and was a great supporter of KGNU Community Radio. After his passing in 1999, the station renamed the event in his memory. This is a family-friendly event for music fans who enjoy clear mountain air, dazzling acoustic music and great food in a spectacular outdoor setting.
The festivities get started at 11:30am and run until 4:30pm on Sunday, July 23rd, and will feature music sets by Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands, Masontown, and Thunder and Rain.
Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands is of course Laurie Lewis, who is an internationally renowned singer, songwriter, and incredible Bluegrass musician known for specifically her fiddle and guitar playing. Playing along her are musicians such as Tom Rozum on Mandolin, Chad Manning on Fiddle, and many more incredible national musicians. Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands are known for sweet melodies, and musicianship, but the live show is outright special.
Masontown hails from Denver, Colorado and offers a new take on the American acoustic tradition with an upbeat and incredibly danceable live show. Mason Town is comprised of guitarist Eric Wiggs, a jazz aficionado reborn as a flatpicking sensation, champion fiddle player Natalie Padilla, Mike Canney, a veteran bluegrass mandolinist and composer, and Bradley Morse on the upright bass, who has a history in classical and jazz traditions. This eclectic group of musicians make up Masontown.
Thunder and Rain is a Golden, Colorado based band, whose sound sways toward rock and alternative country music. The band is scheduled to release their next album, Start Believing, in September, 2017, so we hope to hear some their newest songs this year at The Charles. Known for their unforgettable melodies, Thunder and Rain is striving to put meaning back into modern country music.
