BUS STOP with Don Murray In Person
In Person: Long Islander and Academy Award nominated star DON MURRAY

The Cinema commemorates the 50th Anniversary of legendary Hollywood superstar Marilyn Monroe's death with a rare in-person appearance by Don Murray, Monroe's Academy Award nominated co-star in one of her greatest movies, Joshua Logan's classic 1956 comedy based on a play by Pulitzer Prize winner William Ing

Handsome, gifted actor Don Murray  the self proclaimed "suburban kid from LI" (East Rockaway High School)  burst on the screen in 1956 in his Academy Award-nominated film debut in director Joshua Logan's classic 1956 comedy Bus Stop, based on a play by Pulitzer Prize winner William Inge (Picnic, Splendor in the Grass, Come Back Little Sheba) Don Murray plays Beauregard "Bo" Decker, the towering, muscular, boisterous  and virginal  19 year old Montana cowboy who ropes-in the resistant, would be, flat-singing "chanteuse" Marilyn Monroe ("Cherie") during his first off-the-ranch rodeo competition in Las Vegas. Murray was chosen for the role by a studio eager for a fresh young face (and body) to match Monroe's sex-appeal and charisma. For Marilyn, who'd been studying at the Actors Studio with Lee and Paula Strasberg, Bus Stop was the vehicle she chose to establish herself as a "serious" actress. She did so with great success, landing shining reviews and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in her many-layered role. Filmed in lush Cinemascope, the film featured enormous, tender and steamy close-ups of Murray and Monroe's faces as well as great rodeo scenes, gorgeous landscapes, 'typical' roadside diners and other evocations of Americana.

Interviewed by film scholar and Cinema favorite Foster Hirsch, Don Murray will share fascinating behind-the scenes insights and anecdotes about working with the iconic, often troubled, demanding actress. He'll also regale the audience with further accounts of his growing up on Long Island, drawn from his memoir-in-progress; working with such other "Golden Age" Hollywood actors as Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, Walter Pigeon, Gene Tierney, Hope Lange, Peter Lawford, Burgess Meredith; his starring role as the villainous "Breck" in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and his beloved character "Sid Fairgate" in the classic TV series Knots Landing (1979-1981)  just one of his film and TV roles.

Finally Don Murray will explain his decision to serve as a Conscientious Objector during the Korean War  and tell us what led him to take on the courageous, ground-breaking role, decades before any other heterosexual Hollywood actor would dare, of a closeted congressman being blackmailed for a homosexual relationship in Advise and Consent (1962), Otto Preminger's classic film of Washington political intrigue.

Murray's appearance and interview will be filmed for inclusion in a new documentary being made about his career. Click here for more information
