Violeta (Fragmentos)
Violeta (Fragmentos) is a multidsciplinary piece that explores the visual work of the great Chilean artist Violeta Parra. In honor of the 100 year celebration of Parras birth, the piece pays homage to the artist through distinctive choreography, inviting viewers to discover colors, textures, materials, characters and emotions conjured by the artist. This is the United States premiere of Violeta, with young Chilean and American dancers as part of the cast.
Violeta Parra (1917- 1967) was a Chilean composer, songwriter, folklorist, ethnomusicologist and visual artist. She pioneered the Chilean New Song, the Nueva CanciĆ³n Chilena, a renewal and a reinvention of Chilean folk music music which would extend its sphere of influence outside Chile, becoming acknowledged as The Mother of Latin American folk.
This engagement of Elizabeth Rodriguez is made possible through Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
