COURSE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: Delegated design is the act of the Design Professionals leaving design responsibility to the constructor for one or more specialty scopes of the work for the construction of a project. The concept of delegated design is not new. Architects and engineers have passed some design responsibility to contractors for a long time. Delegated Design is extending beyond this traditional role to include more building elements and sometimes the entire building envelope including Structural steel connections This is a very common example. The steel fabricator designs the connections for the full load carrying capacity of the member.

The building structure gets more complex and their components are increasingly complicated. Thus, the demand on the Delegated Design is increasing with the use of design-build and design-assist approaches.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Participants will understand the advantages of delegating design or engineering of components to the entity providing them and be able to identify the project components appropriate for that process. 2. Participants will understand what is required in defining design criteria and designer qualifications for delegated design and be able to include essential requirements on drawings and in specifications. 3. Participants will be aware of the challenges of coordinating components designed by others with components whose design is retained by the designer of record and be able to plan for their successful integration into the project and will understand the submittal process for delegated design, including shop drawings and calculations, and be able to appropriately include essential requirements in specifications. 4. Participants will understand what responsibility remains with the designer of record and what is legally the responsibility of the entity providing and engineering the component. Participants will be able to review their specifications and contracts to ensure lines of responsibility are clear.
