Krotoa - 12th Annual Harlem International Film Festival
KROTOA Director: Roberta Durrant South Africa, 122 min
Caught between two cultures about to collide and torn apart by those she wanted to bring together.
Krotoa is an historical character, a woman of colour who can be described as the first woman in South Africa who fought against colonialism and discrimination. Krotoa is set in 1652 and is a drama inspired by historical fact about a feisty, bright, young 11 year old girl who is removed from her close-knit Khoi (indigenous) tribe to serve Jan van Riebeeck (the first Governor of the Cape Colony), her uncles trading partner. She is brought into the first Fort established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. There she grows into a visionary young woman who assimilates the Dutch language and culture so well that she rises to become an influential interpreter for van Riebeeck.
