MFVA is delighted to present this first installment of our Maine Film Screening Series at Frontier Cafe! Come for lunch or a drink and enjoy the live jazz vocals and piano of rising star Hattie Simon, with bassist Nick Thompson-Brown. Then settle in for In Good Time: The Piano Jazz of Marian McPartland presented by filmmaker Huey and followed by a Q&A.
Hattie Simon is a sixteen year old rising jazz artist. Hattie brings a pristine and innovative interpretation to standards from the Great American Songbook, contemporary jazz, her original songs and alternative music. Singing and playing piano jazz since the age of 12, Hattie frequently performs at live music venues and clubs throughout Maine and has appeared as a guest artist on the television show 207 on WCSH6. She was a featured Fringe Performer at the 2012 Portland Performing Arts Festival.
In Good Time, The Piano Jazz of Marian McPartland documents the life and career of jazz legend Marian McPartland as a musician, composer, and host of National Public Radio's Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz. A native of England, McPartland arrived in America in 1948 with her husband Jimmy McPartland and established herself as a leading musician in the male dominated jazz world. Now 94, McPartland tells her own story through interviews lmed over 4 years. The lm features McPartland's own musical compositions and piano improvisations. She is seen performing and regaling audiences with her wit and stories in clubs, concerts, and Piano Jazz recording sessions with Dr. Billy Taylor, Elvis Costello, Dave Brubeck, Diana Krall, Bill Frisell, Nnenna Freelon, Renee Rosnes, Dick Hyman, and others.
-In Good Time was selected Best Documentary at the Garden State Film Festival. -DownBeat Magazine selected the lm as "a must have jazz DVD." -Susan Stamberg in a story for NPR wrote, "The DVD is just terric.a marvelous documentation of a true artist."
Huey has been making lms for over 30 years on artists, education, the environment, and Maine. His lms have been shown at lm festivals throughout the US, on PBS, and on television in Europe. In Good Time, his sixth feature length documentary lm, had its premiere at the Maine International Film Festival, July, 2011 and was selected second place as the Audience Favorite Film at MIFF. It has been shown at several lm festivals and is touring the US.
