Coptic Bookbinding Workshop
The Tamworth Lyceum holds its second bookbinding workshop with Allie Thompson. Workshop is a two session class, make sure you are available both May 8th and May 9th 4:00-5:00pm!
The structure we will learn dates back to the 2nd century CE and was first used to connect folded sheets of papyrus. It became associated with early Christians and spread from Coptic Egypt to the west along with the religion. Other binding methods slowly replaced it in Europe as book materials changed, but Coptic binding is enjoying a resurgence of popularity among modern binders. The pages and covers are attached by sewing alone, which makes the binding flexible, strong and attractive.
