My True Colors Festival is an annual event fighting for social justice and promoting cultural diversity through the arts by presenting works in multiple disciplines that are for and by underrepresented multicultural LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, asexual) storytellers. This season includes three amazing showcases from the winners of MTCF's Purple Skies Playwrights Awards:
Maisha Yearwood's play 9 Grams recounts her experience in solitary confinement in Istanbul for carrying 9 grams of hash, having been singled out because she was black and a lesbian. Yearwood is a Harlem native and a Hollywood screenwriter who has been writing and developing sitcoms and feature films for 19 years.
Main Drag is a dark comedy by Jason Aaron Goldberg about Lionel Harris, a wardrobe stylist extraordinaire for pop stars around the world. When his car breaks down on a stretch of highway in the rural south, he finds himself caught at the intersection of combustible issues, where he is forced to confront racism, homophobia, fame, fear, narcissism, humility, love, and a Confederate flag.
Dysfunctioning Just Fine is a autobiographical one-woman musical about the life of a chronically ill woman. The story follows the journey of a differently-able actress, Meredith Wells, as she must come to terms with her illness, navigating through an able-bodied centric profession, and identifying as a same-gender loving person.
Luna Fest is a spoken word and all female rap musical centering on love, romance, and the power of jealousy with lesbian swingers and burlesque dancers in the mix.
Since its launch in June 2015 as an official NYC Pride Event Partner, MTCF has presented over 50 screenings of film shorts, narratives, documentaries, and web series; stage plays; music performances; dance acts; visual arts; and, talkbacks/one-on-one conversations with iconic artists such as For Colored Girls...creator Ntozake Shange.
