Sympathy for a Slacker presented by Andrew Merrell & Dance Up Close/East Bay
"Baggage claim for Slacker Airlines flight 123 will begin shortly at carousel blah blah...come get your s$%&."

With humor, luscious dancing, song, text, a glitter curtain, denim and a megaphone, Sympathy for a Slacker is a post-post-modern wild ride that takes a stab at cathartic betterment.

Dance Up Close/East Bay, Shawl-Anderson Dance Centers performance series, presents Sympathy for a Slacker, a new evening length piece from emerging Oakland choreographer, Andrew Merrell.

Choreography: Andrew Merrell
Dancers: Sarah Chenoweth, Rebecca Johnson, Rogelio Lopez, Andrew Merrell, Mechelle Tunstall

Sympathy for a Slacker playfully and somberly explores some of the less appealing aspects of human nature: self-sabotage, depression, fear of failure, and denial.  Sympathy for a Slacker engages its audiences by asking for sympathy, even when there may be none available or deserved. The work confronts shame head on, struggling, returning, then veering off track into places of numbing comfort. The result is a physical and emotional stream of consciousness response to western pop culture nonsense and profound clarity  an unabashed self-indulgent work created by a self-proclaimed slacker that speaks to the modern dissonance between heart and mind.

Shawl-Anderson Dance Center Artistic Director Jill Randall explains why the work compelled her to present it: "The choreography is funny, heartbreaking, relatable, inspiring. This stellar cast of movers makes the audience feel, breathe, stand at the edge, and indeed, sympathize and empathize."

Dance Up Close/East Bay is a series that was created in May 2008 by Shawl-Anderson Dance Center Artistic Director, Jill Randall. Dance Up Close/East Bay offers local audiences an intimate space to see professional level work, and supports East Bay choreographers who want to produce their work locally. It was launched in May 2008 with Paufve | dance and has since featured artists including Nina Haft and Company, ahdanco, Dandelion Dance Theater, Urban Jazz Dance, Angela Demmel & Dancers, Fog Beast, Stranger Lover Dreamer, Right Brain Performance Lab, kaneisee | collective, and Mid to West Dance Collective.
