Jai Uttal ~ Live in Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz Bhakti Productions presents.... Kirtan! An Evening of Ecstatic Chanting with Jai Uttal, Daniel Paul, Prajna Vieira and perhaps some more amazing guests!
Embark on a vocal journey through the sacred sounds of ancient India. Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Jai Uttal will introduce and lead us in the ancient practice of "Kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Sometimes soft andmeditative and sometimes loud and wildly rhythmic, Kirtan takes the participant on a deep emotional and musical journey through our mostly unexplored inner world. With solo performance and call-and-response group chanting, Jai creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression.
Jai has been leading Kirtans worldwide for over thirty years. "These ancient chants," writes Jai "contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries."
No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique.
Jai Uttal, a Grammy nominated sacred music composer, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist, combines influences from India with influences from American rock and jazz, creating a stimulating and exotic multi-cultural fusion that is truly world spirit music. Having traveled extensively in India, where he met many beautiful saints and singers, Bhakti yoga became his personal path. Jai has been leading kirtans around the world for more than 30 years, creating a safe environment for people to open their hearts and voices.
In 2014 Jai released two new albums, Return to Shiva Station: Kailash Connection, a wholly new re-envisioning of his groundbreaking album Shiva Station, and Lifeline: The Essential Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach Collection, an unfolding musical celebration of their decade of collaboration that reflects the myriad faces of kirtan and beyond. www.JaiUttal.com
