Once upon a time, a humble-but-happy couple lived modestly at the edge of the forest. One day, while the husband, Abel, was cutting wood for the winter fires, a rabbit appeared and offered him a Wishing Skin: a beautiful garment made of wishes and woven by the fairies. Suddenly, their once-fulfilling life seems somewhat . . . small.
Impossible Salt presents The Wishing Skin, a Hungarian folktale that gives hilarious and timely illustration to the expression be careful what you wish for. With original and folk music provided by violinist and pianist Frances Olson and clarinet player Jonah Rees. Featuring IS veterans Parker Genné and Sean Hansberry, as well as newcomer [X]. Directed by Emilia Seay Allen. Told in Impossible Salts wild, improvisational, truthful style.
Impossible Salt tells stories to make us thirst for the truth behind the fantastical. We are an ensemble of musical storytellers inspired by diverse folk traditions. This incredible team of collaborators brings together a varied background of high-level training in classical music, improvisation, theater and folk music. Through the use of Viewpoints, organic improvisation and musical exploration, Impossible Salt has created a bold and subtle new theatrical language that uses words, sets, props and costumes sparingly and effectively. This fiercely talented ensemble digs deep into their voices, bodies and imaginations to create gentle, beautiful, rare new work. Impossible Salt was founded in 2014 by Emilia Seay Allen & Parker Genné, both trained opera singers who yearned for a more organic, accessible, authentic, and magical way to tell stories through music. We have created four original productions to date: TATTERHOOD, HEARTLESS, THE STRANGER for the American Swedish Institute, and THE PROTECTOR OF OSMIR, along with numerous storytelling and pop-up performances and teaching residencies, including with the American Swedish Institute, the Festival of Nations, MacPhail Spotlight Series and Minneapolis Music Co.s Childrens Performance Lab.
