This year's Spring meeting is being hosted by the Moonshine Beekeepers Association and will be held at Ferrum College in Ferrum, VA. Ferrum College is offering buffet lunches and dinners for sale on site in their cafeteria plus lodging in their dorms. We will offer presentations in the evening following dinner.
The following presentations are scheduled:
Dr. Diana Sammatero, retired researcher at the USDA-ARS Carl Hayden Honey Bee Research Center and author of The Beekeepers Handbook, who will present "Microbes and Bees" and "Honey Bee Plants".
Dr. Rebecca Masterman, University of Minnesota Bee Squad Associate Program Director will discuss "Keeping Bees Healthy: Updates on Bee Research, Management and MiteCheck" plus she'll give a workshop on "Making Mite Monitoring Fun".
Dr. Lisa Horth, Associate Professor of Biology at Old Dominium University & VSBA grant recipient will share her research results in "Assessing the Current Genetic Evidence of Disease in Honey and Native Bees in VA" in addition to presenting "Consider the Ultraviolet: What Bees See and Why It Matters"
Samuel Ramsey, PhD student at Dr. Dennis vanEngelsdorp's lab at the University of Maryland will share his groundbreaking research on "Varroa Mites: What are they Really Eating?"
Marc Puckett, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will explain how quail habitat restoration benefits beekeepers in "The Bobwhites and the Bees".
Our own Theo Hartman of Broodminder will share more about their Citizen Science Project, and Virginia beekeepers Mike Church and John Davis will discuss queen rearing and Oxalic acid for Varroa control in special "How I Do It" lectures and workshops.
Registration through this site is available to current VSBA members and expired/non-members. Payment is by credit card. Prices are the same as for mail-in-registrations, with a discount for current members. Online registration is open through June 9, 2017 with a discount for early registration until May 20, 2017.
On Friday, June 16, Walk In Registration (cash or check only) will open at noon with the meeting beginning at 1:00 p.m. Walk In Registration (cash or check only) will re-open on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. and the meeting will resume at 8:45 a.m. Presentations and vendors are scheduled until 8:45 PM on Friday and 5:00 PM on Saturday.
