About the Producers Poppie and James met and fell in love in Oregons Willamette Valley in 1997, where they were both seeking to establish themselves in the burgeoning Pacific Northwest wine industry. They married and began planning a winery of their own. With a particular passion for Rhône wines, they found their ideal location in the Columbia Gorge.
Syncline Wine Cellars is located along the Columbia River in southern Washington State. The estate vineyard, Steep Creek Ranch, is located on the very eastern edge of the new Columbia Gorge AVA where the rainy western Columbia Gorge transitions to the semi-arid eastern Gorge.
Inspired by early efforts of Rhône and Burgundy varietals sampled from Washington wineries, Synclines first vintage in 1999 consisted of 76 cases of Celilo Vineyards Pinot Noir from vines planted in 1973. The next year, production was increased to include Columbia Valley Syrah and Grenache. At the same time they began working with vineyards to plant Mourvedre, Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan.
Holding to the philosophy that great wine is made in the vineyard, the Mantones work with a few select growers, as well as thoughtfully tend their estate vineyard, to produces exceptional wines that show the true character of their unique terroir.
