IRMA HERRERA --------------------------------------------------------- "Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name"
Shelley, the receptionist at the financial district law firm where I work, hands me two message slips when I return from lunch. "Ear-ma can I ask you a favor? When your friends call the office tell them to say their names in English." One message is from Susana, my best friend; the other from a client. I count to three and take a deep breath. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference . . . Where the hell do I start this conversation.
KENNY YUN -------------------------------- "Mom Spilled Guts On My Tater Tots"
Please don't start mom! It's bad enough sitting in a smorgasbord, eating taters. Hope people aren't staring. How can I get her to stop? Oh no, I can't believe mom's going there!
ALLEN CONKLE --------------------------------------------------------- "Not Nothing"
Allen is in the dark, Have you ever tried to see when there are no lights? Oh, wait...there is a light...let it lead you. Listen to the chorus...Follow the lights to the other side. Can you reach the other side through feats of strength or feats of failure? If you look carefully, all of the pain will disintegrate in a glow of cool blue light. If you close your eyes, you will see more than you ever wanted to see. If you close your eyes you might discover something. Get on the ground and give me 50 push-ups! Now!.
WAYNE HARRIS --------------------------------------------------------- "Into Palestine"
On February 21, 2013, Arafay Jadarat, a Palestinian demonstrator, died while in Israeli custody. At the time, Wayne was flying across the Atlantic on a U.S. State Department-sponsored trip to Jerusalem to perform a story about Martin Luther King for Palestinian children. On the plane, he meets a little old Jewish woman from Long Island who tells him "Young man, nothing will ever happen over there until those Arabs love their children more than they hate the Jews. I always say that."
