AGUSTIN LARA ~ HAVANA BOUND
The CCCNY celebrates Cinco de Mayo with a gala concert honoring Mexicos greatest composer, AgustÃn Lara, one of the most prolific and beloved songwriters of the Spanish-speaking world. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1897, Lara's first trip abroad was to Havana in 1933, a visit which marked the beginning of a life-long love affair with Cuba, made manifest in some of his compositions, his close friendship with Ernesto Lecuona, and his professed admiration for the legendary Sindo Garay. Outside the Spanish speaking world, his most famous songs are certainly Granada and Solamente Una Vez, which have been recorded by numerous international singers, among them Caruso, Mario Lanza, Luciano Pavarotti, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, and many others.
