Ready, Set Go! RACE
Falconworks Theater Company, named New Yorks Best Community Theater by the Village Voice in the Best of NYC 2016 issue, returns in May with the premiere of a new musical satire, READY SET GO! RACE exploring the dark themes of racism and white supremacy in the United States. Drawing the audience in with the tone of educational shows like Sesame Street, and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, the play quickly reveals that it will pull no punches.
After our play about the impacts of Hurricane Sandy, says Falconworks Artistic Director Reg Flowers, who wrote and directs the play, some audience members told us they felt ambushed about the subject of race and took it personally. READY SET GO! RACE takes the personal out of it and looks at it as a constructhow it was constructed in the United States. We do it in a way that feels soothingly familiar like childrens educational programming. The production also mixes in elements of game shows, Broadway, vaudeville, and minstrelsy, and uses original songs and dance to examine the history of race in an engaging, yet serious and eye-opening, way even asking the audience to take part at various points in the performance.
READY SET GO! RACE adds racism to the list of complex issues Falconworks has tackled in its home community of Red Hook. Seeking to redefine community theater by creating works that are both of and about its community, Falconworks has focused on gentrification, pollution, disaster recovery, and other key concerns that affect the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn.
