KPTZ Presents a tribute concert "The Beatles" May 7th at 2pm
KPTZ presents Beatles tribute that celebrates the group's timeless music. The event is part of fundraiser to celebrate the station's sixth anniversary.
Who: KPTZ 91.9 FM. What: Beatles Tribute Concert. When: May 6th @ 7pm and May 7th @ 2pm Where: Wheeler Theater, Fort Worden State Park. Why: To celebrate the music of the Beatles and raise operational funds for the station.
The music of the Beatles will be celebrated at a tribute concert that is also intended to raise money for the station's operation. "This is classic music that will be enjoyed by generations," said KPTZ's Tim Quackenbush, who is producing the event. "This is a real celebration of a group that was part of our lives that will be respectful to the music."
The event follows last year's successful Joni Mitchell tribute concert, which quickly sold out the 275-seat Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park. Due to that success KPTZ will present two shows, at 7 p.m. May 6th and 2 p.m. May 7. This is meant to both allow more people to attend the shows and provide a family friendly option, Quackenbush said.
The concerts will feature interpretations of 29 Beatles songs chosen from all phases of the bands career. Also included is an original by Musical Director, Paul Rogers entitled I Was There, a tribute to the Beatles and the 60s. Rogers, an accomplished pianist and Beatles aficionado, said he has gotten a better idea of what makes these songs so special and enduring. Every one of these songs we are doing has an instantly recognizable and hummable melody that is completely different from the one before he said. The underlying chords that support the melodies are far more sophisticated than most of the other pop tunes of that era. Its been a real kick to dig deeper into these tunes and see what makes them tick.
More than a dozen local performers will participate, putting their own spin on the music that we've known for all these years.
Each concert will be preceded by a reception in "Taps at the Guardhouse" and some fun pre-concert events, such as posing for pictures as part of a "Sgt. Pepper" cover facsimile. "We want to bring all the people who support us together, having fun," Quackenbush said.
