ROUTES & ROOTS: CHIMACUM
On Monday, May 8th from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm North Olympic Development Council (NODC) (www.noprcd.org) is hosting a workshop with the Citizens' Institute on Rural Design™ focused on rural transportation. Different environments or types of communities offer different opportunities and challenges to promote walking, walkability, active living, and aging in place. As part of the workshop, participants will Walk N Roll Highway 19 to assess and address challenges and opportunities for promoting safe routes to school, to the park, to the library, or to shop in the Chimacum area. Come see, feel, and experience the environment first hand during the walking audit, led by Samantha Thomas, resident of Port Townsend and Built Environment Catalyst of Blue Zones.
On Tuesday night, May 9th from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm at the Chimacum Grange, the public is welcome to a presentation by Donna Neuwirth, Executive Director and co-founder of Wormfarm Institute in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Reedsburg is a rural agricultural community, not unlike Chimacum, that hosts a successful Fermentation Festival each year with the purpose of celebrating the intersection where culture and agriculture meet. Through slides, a talk, and conversation with the audience, she will make her case that food, farming and the arts, when put together, add up to more than the sum of their parts.
