Biography
Since his sold-out Carnegie Hall debut in 1999, Ernesto Tamayo has become one of the most sought-after classical guitarists in the world. A native of Havana, Mr. Tamayo recently returned from a tour to Cuba where he performed several concerts and visited with family members not seen in a number of years. After beginning his studies with his father and then the renowned Antonio Alberto Rodriguez (Biki) and the incomparable composer/guitarist Leo Brouwer, he left Cuba in 1995 at the behest of Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Classical and enjoyed a full scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. There, in addition to his studies, he was personally mentored by the late cellist and Piatagorsky protégé, Stephen Kates.
He now performs more than 80 concerts a year worldwide and has recorded six CD's. With the corporate sponsorship of the Bacardi Foundation, the Del Mar Foundation,Stephan Connor Guitars and D'Addario Strings, he has made thousands of friends withother guitarists and students as he has toured, doing master classes and distributingfree strings to hundreds of young players.
Mr. Tamayo has performed with numerous orchestras in such countries as Russia,Israel, Cuba, and across the United States in addition to appearances at leading guitar festivals throughout the world such as the International Guitar Festivals in both Cuernavaca, Mexico and New York, the Brno International Guitar Festival in the Czech Republic, Seccano International Festival in Italy, the Thailand International GuitarFestival in Bangkok, the Guitar Gems Festival in Israel, the Royal Music Series inLondon, the Reggio Calabria Guitar Festival in Reggio, Italy, Lafayette Series in Paris,and more. His recital appearances have ranged across the entire United States from Connecticut to Oregon and to Hong Kong, Central and South America as well as Mexico.
Mr. Tamayo has also become well known as both a composer and a conductor as well in recent years. He has performed and recorded several of his own compositions with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra and its Chamber Music Series.
