Coming off the Peak: Designing a Post Carbon World
The stone age, the iron age, the oil age, and then? Today's world economy is dependent on cheap oil and continued growth. Richard Heinberg and others have predicted that within the next few years global production of oil will peak and we will enter into a new industrial era. This will mean dramatic change in transportation, food supply, and common materials: plastic, clothes, buildings and more. Mr. Heinberg suggests that alternative energy technology is insufficient to replace cheap oil. What choices can we make in order to avoid economic and social collapse? Will societies fight to the "last drop" or be able to "power down"? Richard Heinberg is a writer and teacher whose focus is peak oil. Presently he teaches Human Ecology at New College of San Francisco in Santa Rosa, California. He has recently written two books on the topic of peak oil: The Party's Over- Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies and Powerdown: Options and Actions for a Post Carbon World.
